This is an awesome look at three eras in history and how it affected the lives of three different women whose lives are intertwined. Mary was left alone during the Civil War while her husband went off to war. She was only able to survive because of the help of a runaway slave. Nora lived during the tumultuous 1960’s and dared to fall in love with a black man. Finally, Elizabeth loses her journalism job in Detroit and seeks a new home with a distant relative who has a story to tell herself. What a blockbuster novel with authentic historical facts and empathy for the struggle and challenges these women face! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction that also touches the current era.
