Review of SERIAL BURN by Lynette Eason

About the Book

ISBN-13:9780800741211 Publisher:Baker Publishing Group Publication date:01/21/2025. Series:Lake City Heroes , #3 Pages:320

She’s out for justice. But the arsonist she’s tracking is out for retribution.

Now the fire marshal of Lake City, Jesslyn McCormick is determined to find the person who started the fire that robbed her of her family when she was just seven years old. As the twentieth anniversary of the tragedy approaches, a string of fires—including at Jesslyn’s church—brings up all those old feelings and offers new evidence.

Because church fires are considered a hate crime, FBI Special Agent Nathan Carlisle is called in to work with local law enforcement. Nathan has his own past—one he’d prefer not to revisit. And focusing on helping Jesslyn track down the arsonist is a great distraction.

As both the case and the chemistry between Jesslyn and Nathan heat up, memories will come flooding in from the past to bump up against hopes for the future. And when Jesslyn comes face-to-face with her worst nightmare, she’ll have to confront her fears and rely on Nathan and her community of friends in order to survive.

My Thoughts

The latest book in the Lake City Heroes series is one that held me enthralled from the first page until the satisfying conclusion. I was sympathetic with Jesslyn McCormick and her intense desire to find the arsonist who killed her entire family when she was a young girl. As a fire marshal, Jesslyn is adamant about tracking down the arsonist who wreaked such havoc in her young life and is certain that the new fires being set around the town all relate to the perp who killed her family. Along with FBI special agent Nathan Carlisle, Jesslyn faces insurmountable odds and increasing danger as the fires keep getting more and more personal and the threat to her is obvious. Calling on their friends in Lake City to help keep Jesslyn safe, Nathan finds himself attracted to her but she is not ready for a relationship and avoids his advances. The romance progresses methodically, but the suspense continues to build as Jesslyn is getting closer to discovering the truth about her father’s past and the fire that led to the destruction of her family. I really enjoyed the head-spinning twists and the complex plot that included clues from the past woven into the current events. The suspense was compelling and the characters were dynamic and realistically flawed. With faith as a firm foundation and part of the story, this was an enjoyable and entertaining clean read with multiple layers and a fast-moving plot that was believable and satisfyingly puzzling, with clues that led me to keep guessing until the final reveal. Although this is the third book in a series, it can definitely be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

Review of HOLMES IS MISSING by James Patterson and Brian Sitts

About the Book

Page Count:352

Publisher :Little, Brown and Company

ISBN-139780316569972

Success has come quickly to Holmes, Marple & Poe Investigations. The New York City agency led by three detectives—Brendan Holmes, “the brain,” Margaret Marple, “the eyes,” and Auguste Poe, the “muscle”—with famous names and mysterious pasts is one major case away from cementing its professional reputation.

But as a series of child abductions tests the PIs’ legendary skills, the cerebral Holmes’s absence leaves a gaping hole in the agency roster.

Only by closing ranks and solving the mystery within can they recover all that’s been lost.

My Thoughts

The private investigative team of Marple, Poe and Holmes takes on a really tough case involving stolen newborns. Their investigation is turned on its head when Brendan Holmes decides that he doesn’t want to be part of the group anymore. Suffering from the lingering effects of addiction, Holmes isn’t sure what he wants to do, but he knows that he doesn’t want to continue to work in the partnership. Marple and Poe convince him to help them with the case of the kidnapped infants and thus the non-stop action begins. Encompassing several U.S. states and two continents, this book is a high-octane thrill ride, with false clues and multiple suspects along with a police detective who is less than cooperative with their investigation. I really enjoyed the way the trio figured out what was really happening and followed their instincts to try to save the babies’ lives as well as solve a second mystery involving a serial killer. There was a lot going on in this book, at a fast pace and with the author’s signature style of short, packed with action chapters. I felt as though I got to know Marple, Holmes and Poe more personally in this book because their flaws were evident as well as their many strengths. They also showed how much they cared about each other and that solving the case was not for monetary gain but rather for the satisfaction of helping others stay safe. The interaction between the characters was realistic and the plot is relevant and compelling. This is the second book in the series but can be read and enjoyed as a standalone if you have just discovered it.

My Thoughts

This book is a practical guide as well as a devotional for women who are suffering through loneliness. I was particularly drawn to the scriptures at the end of each chapter which lead the reader to be reflective and honest as well as to draw the reader closer to God. There are also challenges at the end of each chapter that encourage the readers to dig deeper and think harder. This book is a good resource for those who are dealing with loneliness as well as anyone who wants to minister to those suffering from the new loneliness caused by social isolation in today’s world. The topic is compelling, relevant and a welcome breath of fresh air for those who deny that loneliness is even possible in today’s high tech, connected all the time world.

My Thoughts

This novel offers intrigue that blasts out of its pages and action that is non-stop. I was absolutely mesmerized by this book! The action and drama went from intense to explosive as Tyler Reid tries to forget his past a d safeguard those in danger from a rogue CIA agency. I was reminded again and again of Jack Reacher, James Bond and Mission Impossible. Tyler’s bravery is exemplary and his past failures keep him motivated to succeed in finding a missing daughter and destroying the rogue agency. This is a brilliantly written spy novel, combined with military tactics and what can only be described as heroic actions. The pages flew by as I raced to the end. I was completely invested in the lives of the dynamic and interests holding characters. I kept thinking that the suspense and death tally couldn’t climb much higher, but the author continued to surprise me with an amazing finesse in storytelling and in creating believable and vulnerable characters. This is a story of good versus evil in which evil seems to be winning. I am already looking forward with breathe holding anticipation to the next novel in the series!

About the Book

Title: Once Upon a Horse
Series: The Vets of Heavenbrooke County #1
Author: Helena Smrcek
Publisher: EverWind Press
Release Date: November 15, 2024
Genre: Sweet Contemporary Romance

In the charming Heavenbrooke county, where country
life meets big-city dreams, 28-year-old accountant
Stella Barkley is about to discover that sometimes love
arrives when you least expect it.

After a flat tire leaves her stranded on the side of the
road, a handsome stranger comes to her rescue—Dr.
Jason Alba, a dedicated veterinarian with a heart as
big as his ambitions. Their initial encounter sparks an
undeniable connection, aided by Stella’s spirited Jack
Russell T errier, Milkbone, who takes an immediate
liking to Jason thanks to his pocket full of treats.

As their paths intertwine, Stella finds herself drawn to
Jason, despite their differing views on farm life and
future aspirations. Their budding romance takes
unexpected turns, especially when a mysterious missing horse from a local breeder, Enrique Rodriguez, complicates matters.

When Thanksgiving arrives, Jason becomes Stella’s unexpected hero, saving her from a culinary disaster and charming her city friends with his warm spirit. But just as their relationship begins to flourish, a crisis emerges in the barn: the missing mare, Starling, is discovered in distress, leading Jason to perform a life-saving surgery that brings them even closer.

However, secrets and misunderstandings threaten to tear them apart. Stella’s desperate attempt to protect a champion mare sends her on a collision course with both Jason and Enrique, forcing her to confront her choices and the future she thought she wanted.

When Stella realizes that her life in Heavenbrooke may be over, she pens a heartfelt goodbye letter to Jason, leaving it at the church where their story began. Alone on Christmas morning, she grapples with loneliness and regret, only to be surprised by the appearance of the man who stole her heart.

Can a simple letter and the magic of Christmas lead them to a second chance? Will they find a way to bridge the divide between city and country, love and loyalty?

Join Stella and Jason on a heartfelt journey of love, loss, and the enduring power of second chances in Once Upon a Horse. Perfect for fans of contemporary romance, this tale of unexpected connections and the bonds we forge will leave you believing in the wonder of love.

My Thoughts

This is a charming and captivating retelling of fairy tales with happy endings and a horse that plays a big role in the romance. Stella is an accountant who has moved to the small village of Heavenbrook to get back to the roots of her grandparents who have passed away. She works at the local country store, has a darling dog named Milkbone and is basically a lonely young woman just trying to survive. Enter Prince Charming in the form of a local vet named Dr. Jason Alba. He wins Stella’s attention and affection right away by giving Milkbone a treat each time he sees him. The two seem destined for romance until the big secret that Stella does not want to tell Jason comes out during her Thanksgiving dinner celebration. Sparks fly, the explosive kind, not the romantic ones, and the two separate, both disillusioned with love and each other. This is a story that is fast-paced, easy to read and absolutely well told with characters that made me want to either cheer for them or slap them, depending on their current actions in the tale. With realism mixed with romance and a little magic of well-loved fairy tales, this book is an enchanting clean read that I enjoyed from beginning to end.

Review of YOU CAN’T HURT ME by Emma Cook

I’m happy to be part of the HTP BOOKS Ball Blog Tour! I hope you enjoy my review.

About the Book

ISBN: 9781335430489
Publication Date: November 5, 2024 Publisher: Hanover Square Press

Book Summary:

The Silent Patient meets Rebecca in this twisty debut about the mysterious death of a woman with congenital analgesia, a rare condition where she can’t feel any pain – and an obsessive journalist who will stop at nothing to uncover her most dangerous secrets.
Meet Eva, who can’t feel pain, and Anna, who can’t escape it.
Everyone has heard about the case of Eva Reid. Ever since she was born, she’s been immune to physical pain – she can get a paper cut, break a limb, and even give birth without feeling a single thing. Her rare condition has long-captivated reporters and researchers – including Dr. Nate Reid, Eva’s husband and acclaimed scientist renowned for his work in The Pain Laboratory. Also among them is Anna Tate, a ruthless journalist with a dark past of her own.
When Eva is suddenly found dead inside her home, it raises a flurry of questions around the last night of her life – and who might’ve been involved. Anna finds herself growing increasingly obsessed with Eva’s case: her cloistered, painless existence, her promising career as a psychotherapist, and especially her toxic relationship to Dr. Reid, whom she met and married as his former patient. But what other secrets could they be hiding?

When Dr. Reid embarks on the process of writing a book about Eva, Anna makes sure she’s first in line to work on the project with him. As she slowly inserts herself into their home and seeks to uncover what’s fact and what’s fiction, shocking discoveries await her – and not everyone may come out unscathed…

My Thoughts

What a chillingly delightful novel! The woman married to the pain specialist, Eva, is found dead under some rather mysterious circumstances. But what a complication! She cannot feel pain since she suffers from a congenital condition that precludes her from doing so. When Anna, a ghostwriter, enters the scenario, she is fascinated with Eva’s story and Dr. Reid’s obsession with studying pain. Anna is determined to find out what really happened the night that Eva died, but her quest is filled with some unexpected twists and turns as well as danger. This is a moderately paced novel, perfectly paced for the action in the story. The characters are compelling and dynamic and the research that is included in the story is absolutely riveting. I had trouble putting down the book, especially once Anna started her independent investigation. This book proves that one should not take anything for granted and that not all narrators can be trusted. With a web of deceit built into the story as well as a cleverly executed page-turner with some head-spinning twists, this novel captivated my attention and intrigued me with its profound revelations about pain and how it can be manipulated. Edgy and satisfying novel that is terrifyingly brilliant!

Review: I THINK I WAS MURDERED by Colleen Coble and Rick Acker

About the Book

Product Details

ISBN-13:9780840712578 Publisher:Nelson, Thomas, Inc. Publication date:11/12/2024 Pages:352

Just a year ago, Katrina Berg was at the pinnacle of her career. She was a rising star in the AI chatbot start-up everyone was talking about, married with an adoring husband, and had more money than she knew how to spend. Then her world combusted. Her husband, Jason, was killed in a fiery car crash. Her CEO was indicted, and, as the company’s legal counsel, Katrina faces tough questions as the Feds take over and lock her out of her office. The final blow is the passing of her beloved grandmother.

Her most prized possession is the beta prototype for a new, ultra-sophisticated chatbot loaded onto her phone. The contents of Jason’s email, social media backups, pictures, and every bit of data she could find were loaded into the bot, and Katrina has “talked” to him every day for the past six months. She has been amazed at how well it works. Even the syntax and words the bot uses sound like Jason. Sometimes, she imagines he isn’t really dead and is right there beside her. She knows it’s slowing her grief recovery, but she can’t stop pretending.

On a particularly bad day, she taps out: Tell me something I don’t know. The cursor blinks for several moments and seems frozen before the reply flashes quickly onto the screen: I think I was murdered.

Distraught, Katrina returns to her cozy Norwegian-flavored hometown in the Northern California redwoods and enlists the help of Seb Wallace, local restaurateur and longtime acquaintance, to try to parse out the truth of what really happened. They must navigate the complicated paths of grief, family dynamics, and second chances, as well as the complex questions of how much control technology has. And staying alive long enough to do that is far more difficult than either of them dreamed.

My Thoughts

I loved the complexity of this book, with its multiple layers and how the protagonist dealt with her grief by using a Chatbot with AI. Katrina’s loss of her husband Jason, followed by the death of her beloved grandmother, seems to get her to focus on finding out what really happened to Jason. When he “messages” her on the AI chat that he thinks he was murdered, Katrina is intrigued enough that she continues to pursue clues to find out if he was murdered and if so, who did it and why. The mystery is totally intriguing and the relationships between the characters are as complex as the plot. Katrina meets Seb when she goes back to North Haven for her grandmother’s funeral, the same Seb from high school who carried a torch for her but was too shy to act on his attraction. Now he is a famous restauranteur and wants to help Katrina unravel the mystery of Jason’s death. Meanwhile, back in Katrina’s life in CA, she and her company are being investigated by the FBI, her friend and co-worker Liv is pregnant and has no place to go since they are both unemployed now. So Katrina invites Liv to stay with her in North Haven. The plot gets more and more complicated and the clues are abundant. I enjoyed following the clues, getting to know all of the places Katrina visited as she searched out a hidden message from Jason as well as getting acquainted with a multitude of possible suspects and motives. This is romantic suspense with an edge since grief is added in as well as current technology. I found the story fascinating and the characters realistic. This book offers a great read that made me think as I sought to solve the mystery alongside Katrina and Seb. The romance element simmers under the surface, breaking through with a few kisses and a lot of questioning looks. It took second place to the mystery but added to the intrigue as I guessed whether the couples would truly get together and stay that way or not. I highly recommend this novel as it held me captivated for days as I tried to figure out whodunit and how Katrina would be able to deduce the truth from the AI messages that Jason sent her. Fans of romantic suspense books that are original and believable will definitely want to read this book!

Review of DEADLY REVENGE by Patricia Bradley

About the Book

Product Details

ISBN-13:9780800741648 Publisher:Baker Publishing Group Publication date:11/05/2024 Series:Pearl River , #3 Pages:400

Deputy Jenna Hart has only been working in her sleepy hometown of Pearl Springs for seven months when city officials begin to be targeted by a killer. Twenty years ago, the construction of a dam caused people to lose their land to eminent domain. That wound has not healed with time, and someone bearing a grudge is clearly set on revenge. With the former mayor of Pearl Springs now running for the US Senate, Jenna will have to call in backup to ensure his protection.

That’s where Agent Maxwell Anderson comes in. He and Jenna used to work together in the Chattanooga Police Department, and there was even a smoldering fire of attraction. Now they team up to track down the killer before a big political rally that promises to bring not only the former mayor into the crosshairs but hundreds of civilians as well.

As the sparks of romance reignite and the threads of the investigation get tangled when another suspect comes into play, Jenna and Max will have to draw on all of their skills to stay alive and prevent the wave of disaster poised to hit the community of Pearl Springs. The question is, can either of them fully trust that the other has their back?

My Thoughts

Romantic suspense doesn’t get any better than this book with its second chance at love trope and danger running rampant in the small town of Pearl Springs. When Jenna Hart left Chattanooga under a cloud of suspicion, she found a new place and a new job as a deputy in Pearl Springs, back home where her roots are. But when local men are murdered, her refuge isn’t safe anymore. TBI agent Max Anderson comes to town to protect a Senate candidate and finds out that the threats against him are real, but all is not as it seems. The deceit is in layers in this book and unravels carefully and enticingly. There is a subplot about Jenna’s being endangered by her past and the two plots are woven together seamlessly. I really enjoyed the dynamics between the main characters and the realistic dialogue with the secondary characters. I especially liked the mystery that was gripping and the tension that escalated as danger got closer to Jenna and Max. The story is expertly crafted and addictive. By the end of the first chapter, I was totally engaged in the story and wanted to keep reading to find out what the secrets were and why so many people were involved in keeping it. The author teasingly reveals the details slowly and in a perfect way to keep me engrossed in the plot and the lives of the characters. Perfectly paced and with realistic and unique characters, this book is one not to miss that captivated me as I pieced together the clues right along with the characters.

Even though Bethanne Hostetler has found some peace seven years after an attempted assault and the accidental death of Peter Miller, she is still haunted by the memory. When her Englisher cousin, Candace—who has just been crowned Miss Crittenden County—reveals that she has a stalker, all of Bethanne’s old fears come rushing back.

Jay Byler had once been Peter’s best friend, and the fact that he did not protect Bethanne that fateful night has haunted him ever since. To make matters worse, she continues to avoid him—even as he continues to love her. Jay can only hope and pray that one day Bethanne will see the person he is today and not the boy he used to be.

As Candace’s stalker becomes bolder, Officer Ryan Mulany becomes her escort to various events. He knows he should only think of Candace as a job, but the more time they spend together, the harder it gets to maintain professional distance. And when everyone’s worst fears are realized, all four must work together to prevent another tragedy before time runs out and another innocent person is hurt.

My Thoughts

This book tells the story of two cousins who are dealing with relationship issues. Bethanne has a fear of being around people, and she is just coming out of her shell after an assault by her former boyfriend. She is still not totally comfortable in public, but she is getting better. Her cousin Candace competed for and won the Miss Crittenden County Contest. But Candace’s issue is that she has a stalker, so a new deputy named Ryan Milanese appoints himself to be her chaperone and body guard to all of her events. The two cousins are making progress with trusting others when the unthinkable happens. This is an Amish romance with a lot of suspense included in the story. The suspense is compelling and the characters are realistically portrayed and very easy to empathize with. I enjoyed the pace of the story, which I considered moderate until the big conflict. Then, the pace raced at a breakneck speed to the conclusion. The author does a good job of pointing out the differences between Bethanne’s lifestyle and Candace’s since Candace was not raised Amish but Bethanne was. I really enjoyed the way the girls leaned on each other and learned how to accept help from others. The story is engaging, the characters are dynamic and I highly recommend this book for those looking for Amish romantic suspense that is definitely Christian fiction without graphic details.
