God Will Finish It

He Started It (YouVersion Daily Refresh, 5-02-25)

When the Apostle Paul was locked in a Roman prison for telling people about Jesus, he sent a letter of hope to his friends back in Philippi. A portion of it said:

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭1:6‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Though Paul was writing to specific people in the first-century Church, his words are just as true for the global Church today.

Think about it: Who started this thing we call life? Who made this world and everything in it? Who fine-tuned the universe to actually make sense? Who put you here—at this specific time in history? Who handcrafted your body, your mind, your strengths, and your unique-to-you personality? Who began this good work?

Before you were ever born, God already had you in mind. Before you could even walk or talk or have dreams for yourself, God already had a plan. Before you knew to look to Him or to follow Him or to worship Him, God was already at work—in you, around you, and through you.

Sometimes it feels like we’re just wasting time and taking up space, without real purpose. But—it turns out—God is intentional and He makes no mistakes. To top it off…

God always finishes what He starts.

The story isn’t over. When Christ returns once and for all, the work of God through His people will finally be complete.

Until then, let’s commit to God’s good work inside of us.
Let’s magnify Him in everything we do.
Let’s believe that He’ll finish what He has begun.

My Thoughts

I like to finish what I start and I generally have good intentions to do so. But sometimes, I am thwarted by others or I just drop the ball myself, losing interest in the project. For many years, I had an unfinished crochet blanket in my closet. I had started it when my son’s wife was pregnant and then I never finished it. It was a nice color and had a nice pattern, and I did enjoy crocheting. As the years passed and I still saw the unfinished blanket in the closet, I tried several times to finish it, but I had lost two things: 1)the ability since my arthritis was painful in my hands and 2)the knowledge since I had forgotten how to crochet the stitches as well as the pattern I was working on. I had lost my motivation to complete the project. My intentions were good, but my follow through was lacking.

I am thankful that God does not have that problem. He starts something and sees it all the way to completion. He is our Creator and His love for us is perfect, not wavering and distracted. Thus, He can be trusted to bring us to the finish line. That truth motivates me to stick with God and to keep trying. I may fall and fail but I know that if I pick myself up and truly repent, God is right there helping me to get back on the right track again. He doesn’t just say, “That’s it! I am done with you. You’re on your own now!” I think many people have had that experience in life with other people and that makes it hard for them to trust God. But God does not lie and He does not quit. He keeps working, molding, shaping, whispering words of encouragement to us. I don’t always see what God is doing or the plan that He has for me, but I know that whatever the end result is will be a good one and the one that is perfect for me. It’s all a matter of believing God’s Word and it says He will finish what He started. I believe that and I hope you do, too.

Just Be Willing

Immeasurably More (YouVersion Daily Refresh 5-01)

What’s the boldest prayer you can think to pray? Or the most incredible thing you can dare to imagine?

Did you know that God can top it?

Paul said it like this:

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3‬:‭20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

You know those quiet dreams in your heart? God put them there. You know that ache for something better than this broken world? God gave you that desire. You know the deepest longings of your soul? God knows how to fulfill them.

Like Paul said, God can do more than we ask or imagine, but we also must remember the second part of his words: according to his power at work within us.

It’s all God’s power and His plan. But He has invited us into it.

So what’s our part in this process?

We can give glory to Him—knowing that it’s Him who gives us the desire and power to do what pleases Him (Philippians 2:13). He created us, loves us, and has entrusted us with sharing His message with the world.

We can submit ourselves to His plan—knowing that it’s all God, but He chooses to work in and through His people to accomplish His purposes. He doesn’t need us to be perfect, He just wants us to be willing.

We can trust Him with the process—knowing that He is good, righteous, worthy, strong, and eternal. We don’t have to know all the answers because we already have Him, and He can do more than we can ask or imagine.

My Thoughts

I put in bold what I think is the most important part of this devotional. We have to be willing to follow God’s plan. I know that one of my strengths is organization. But it is also a great weakness for me because after I get everything all organized, I don’t like it when something changes my plans. That is actually a gross understatement. I have a tendency to get really stressed if my plans are not carried out exactly the way I planned them. God has been working on me about this, showing me that His plan is the one that counts and if He wants to stop or adjust my plan, then I have to go with that. It will be better for me in the long run. God is always working to do more than I ask, more than I think of, even with my copious lists with everything all planned out. God’s plan is the best one! I am still learning to pause, listen and trust because even though I may fret about changes, God is in control of the changes and the final results. And that makes everything okay with me.

Greater Is He…

As I sit and write this post, I have been watching the VE Day Celebration in Great Britain on BBC. That is not usually what I do in the mornings, but my husband arose at o’dark thirty and left the TV on and I was drawn into the pomp happening on the screen. I watched the king salute the troops, I watched Kate and Prince William and their family greeting people. Mostly I watched faces. People looked happy and perhaps grateful to be there. Eighty years since this big war was over and the evil Nazi empire was stopped.

It has been over two thousand years since our victory was won and yet many of us (including me) still go around with long faces some days, looking as though we have lost or are about to lose everything. But the victory was ours the minute that Jesus said, “It is finished” and we accepted Him as Lord and Savior. The battle was for our souls, our future with God and we won because Jesus fought for us with His life!

Unfortunately, the battle for our minds continues as Satan wants nothing less than to come between us and God. He wants to convince us that he is more powerful than God and that there is nothing we can do about it. Here is a portion of my devotional from the YouVersion Daily Refresh on May 5th:

Our enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. To pervert, manipulate, and confuse, distract, divide, and disable.

But God is greater than the doubts that clutter your mind, the enemies that frustrate your plans, the heart-wrenching and even soul-crushing situation that’s currently consuming your thoughts.

You can fight from a place of victory because the battle has already been won.

Jesus has already conquered death. And now, while we wait for others to come to salvation and for God to bring all things to completion under Christ’s authority, we can fight with a confident hope.

Knowing that God is greater should give us peace in our hearts and help us to be ready to win the battles here on earth. They are small skirmishes compared to what Jesus had to go through, although to us they may seem like the great battles of WWII. We need to keep a perspective that God is greater and that we can and will get through to the other side. Years of testimonials to this truth help to assuage the doubts and fears; we just have to remind ourselves of our relationship with God and that He is always faithful.

I found this graphic online and I thought it was cute as well as appropriate. I hope you get a chuckle from it and also remember what it says when you face the next challenge. I don’t want to discourage you, but the challenges will come in this life. It’s our response that makes the difference for us!

We Are His

Do Not Fear (YouVersion, Daily Refresh, 05-04-25)

In Isaiah 43:1, God speaks to His people with a message of hope and encouragement:

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”

These words are not just a reassurance—they are a reminder of who we are, and whose we are.

God is both our Creator and Redeemer. He is the one who formed us, knitting us together in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13), and He is the one who redeemed us, bringing us back into relationship with Himself through Jesus.

We can rest in peace and confidence knowing are not forgotten or abandoned, but intimately known and cared for by the God of the universe.

When God says, “Do not fear,” He is not ignoring the challenges you face. He is acknowledging the reality of fear and offering comfort in His presence. Fear often arises from feeling alone or uncertain, but God’s promise is clear: He has called us by name, and we belong to Him. We are His, no matter what we face.

Whether you are walking through a season of uncertainty, facing personal challenges, or carrying burdens that weigh heavy on your heart, this verse invites you to rest in the truth that you are redeemed, known, and loved.

God’s call on your life is unshakeable. Today, stand in that assurance and walk forward with courage, knowing you are never alone and always held in His loving care.

My Thoughts

What a great follow up devotional from the previous one about worrying! My greatest takeaway is that God doesn’t say there is no fear. He acknowledges that fear exists, it’s real, but we can overcome it by realizing that He knows who we are and what we fear. We can be courageous in whatever we face because we don’t face anything alone.

As we prepare for our long trip, I am thankful that God continues to reach out to me with assurance that no matter what happens, He will be there. I am not confident in my body being strong or our car being reliable. But I am confident that God is able and He will love me through this adventure that has me tied up in knots. I am trying to focus on positives, the pleasure of seeing grandchildren graduate and visiting with family. I am working on thinking on the good things just as God encourages me to do in His Word. I appreciate your prayers as I fight this battle with my mind.

My Thoughts

What an uplifting story of hope and faith as Florene meets her destiny in her search for refuge from her abusive partner and from a blizzard! This story captured my heart and my imagination from the first page and kept me engrossed in it until the end. When Florene was tossed out of the car during a blizzard, she had no way of knowing that her rescuer would be a gentle giant named Gil. Taking shelter with his family, Florene learns the meaning of true faith and being willing to reach out to help others. I liked the dynamics between the characters and how realistically they were portrayed, with their raw edges exposed. I really enjoyed the story that had a hint of mystery to it involving the brother Eli’s shenanigans and desire to be free of his family’s homestead. The faith foundation was an integral part of the story as Florene needs to find her way back to God before she can be whole again and gentle Gil gives her the example she needs to do just that. This is a book that should not be missed by anyone who enjoys Christian romance with a hint of danger and a lot of family love and romance.

Sunday’s Exhortation

Do you tend to worry? Do you let small things bother you so much that you can’t think of anything else except that one small thing? This describes me…I am still learning not to worry, but it’s a hard thing for me. I am a champion worrier, much to the dismay of my loved ones and my own body. I tell myself that I have let it go and next thing you know, that concern has popped right into my head again. So, this is my exhortation to you and to me today and into the future.

I don’t really worry about food or clothing, but I do sometimes worry about issues with my body and things around me that need repairs that I don’t have the money for. I think that this Scripture applies to anything and everything that we are worrying about. We need to let it go and trust God to take care of things for us. No, He is not suddenly going to make all the needed repairs, but I believe that He can keep them going until we do have the finances to repair or replace them.

This right here is where our focus needs to be, on God and His kingdom and His righteousness. If our focus is on God, then it is not on the things that concern us. I have found that mostly what I worry about doesn’t even end up happening, so I am choosing to let go, one day, one hour, one minute at a time and believe that God is taking care of it for me.

That being said, I would appreciate prayers for our upcoming trips to graduations. Thank you in advance and God bless you!

My Thoughts

The story of the FBI agent who has to flee cybercriminals in the Allegheny Mountains is a compelling one. But when Eli’s young daughter Skylar and his former girlfriend Molly were added to the mix, the book became even more satisfying. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and was drawn to Molly, the ranger who studies plants and tries to save things, When she is faced with danger and has to choose to help Eli protect Skyler, she doesn’t hesitate. Molly is courageous and willing to sacrifice for the safety of others, even though that is not her area of expertise. The plot is fast-paced and kept me guessing all the way to the end. I had a suspicion about who the criminals might be, but I was wrong multiple times, since the red herrings were so well crafted. The setting is atmospheric and perfect for the action taking place, with plenty of places to take refuge and lots to enjoy along the way. The chemistry between Molly and Eli was definitely perking, but the relationship between Skylar and Molly was touching. Skylar is a motherless child and seems to bond with Molly seamlessly, knowing that she can be trusted. That bond was carried throughout the story and was a sweet portrayal of the innocence of a child as well as their intuitive knowledge of who can be trusted. Filled with suspense and jaw-dropping twists, this tale is one not to be missed because it has it all: a riveting plot that is fast-paced, characters that popped from the page into my heart, and a setting that was unique and realistic.

My Thoughts

The latest book in the Jeopardy Falls series is absolutely compelling and breathtakingly complex. With settings that include a retreat, a reservation and Las Vegas, the action continues nonstop from beginning to end. Once skip tracer Riley finds out that a friend of hers is missing from a nearby spa and retreat, she and teammate Grayson go undercover to try to find out what happened to Kelly. What they find was not what they expected and so much worse than they imagined. The suspense in the story is woven in with the romance that is developing between the two main characters and is carefully plotted to be a crucial part of the story. There are some head-spinning twists that were brilliantly included and a strong message of hope for the future. The complicated plot included dual storylines that were edgy and that dovetailed fabulously in the satisfying conclusion. The characters were believable, working hard to overcome difficulties from their pasts and with personalities that were realistically flawed and lovable. The tension in the plot is relentless as Grayson and Riley race to find Kelly and the truth about her disappearance. This book presents Christian romantic suspense at its best, with family dynamics, developing romance and a mystery to be solved on a ticking clock timeline. Although part of a series, this book can be enjoyed all by itself, but I do highly recommend reading the first book, too, even if you read them out of order. The series is fantastic fiction!

My Thoughts

This is a clean romance with some drama built into the story that kept me fully engaged. Kayla Harding returns to her hometown of Medina, Ohio after a rough divorce. There she finds herself needing to use a food bank because her resources are low and her cupboards are almost bare. At Loaves of Love, Kayla meets a former friend from high school, football star Sean Copeland who is now a widower and an assistant coach. Raising his six-year old son Jackson alone since the death of his wife Danette the previous year, Sean is kind-hearted and jumps right in to help Kayla learn how to make a loaf of bread at the food bank. Their friendship progresses normally, with Kayla hiding secrets and Sean leery about a new relationship. I enjoyed the humility that Kayla showed and also the realistic scenes in which she was ashamed to have to ask for food. I really liked the character of Edna, the lady who ran the food bank and who helped Kayla feel more comfortable about needing help. There were a lot of characters in this sweet romance, including Kayla’s demanding boss and Sean’s teasing family. The cast of characters added to the drama as well as the character development of the protagonists. The novel was an entertaining read that also presented the truth about what can happen when you are starting over and have little recourse but to ask for help. Told with compassion and a lot of love, this is a memorable story of a couple who find each other in the most unlikely place and who help each other to discover truths about themselves and each other.

But the storm destroys the diner, compounding Tug’s grief from losing his love the previous year. The longer Rosemary stays, the more she sees Tug’s deep sadness and resolves to help him. Together with Tug and friends Amanda and Paul, they all pitch in to help the close-knit community recover and rebuild.

As Amanda and Paul reconnect after losing touch during the storm, their plans to take things slow seem increasingly impractical. While Rosemary and Tug help the young couple navigate their relationship, they also find themselves building a friendship that begins to restore them both. But can that friendship convince them that love is possible for anyone who’s willing to take a risk—even those who never hoped they’d find it again?

My Thoughts

Rosemary is a widow who is searching for a new purpose in life, but she doesn’t know where to begin to find it. She is just fairly certain that living with her newly divorced daughter Nina is not going to fulfill her, so she sets out on a trip to visit Whelk Island, a little town in the Outer Banks where she can visit her high school friend Kathleen and have some time on the beach to reflect on her past and her future. Having spent almost fifty years with her husband in Hawaii, Rosemary hears the call of the ocean and really thinks that time there will ground her and show her what she should do to continue her life without her beloved husband Kai. Once there, she meets Tug, the owner of a renowned diner and an all-around good guy and friend to everyone. The two hit it off immediately, and their friendship is encouraged when a hurricane comes through and forces people to work together to prepare and then to clean up. I really enjoyed the realistic setting of the beach town facing a natural disaster and the fact that the characters all pulled together and watched out for each other. I also liked the dual romances in the story and the way the author seamlessly wove the two stories together in an engaging and moderately paced plot. My favorite parts were the humor and the ones where the characters just enjoyed being together, enjoying a meal and dancing or strolling on the beach. I also liked the themes of a hopeful future and living in the present instead of dwelling in the past. Forward together is a good and memorable theme for this novel and I enjoyed how this happened for the youngest to the oldest characters. This book is a sequel to the first novel set on Whelk Island, The Shell Collector, but this one can be read and enjoyed as a standalone as new characters and a whole new story is told here.
