Chase Crandall is a burned-out defense attorney ready to extricate himself from the grind of criminal law. After he loses a client to tragedy, he’s ready for an in-house corporate position.

When Chase is assigned to Anneliese’s case, Margeaux is horrified. She doesn’t want him to provide legal counsel—not after what happened to his past client. And not with the evidence incriminating Anneliese.

Despite their mutual misgivings, the lawyer and professor pair up to find the killer and prove Anneliese’s innocence. Will they be able to untangle the mystery—and navigate their growing interest in one another—before the wrong person is charged with murder?

My Thoughts

This is a legal suspense/thriller with lots of unexpected twists and a whole cast of possible suspects to keep you reading. Annaliese is a college student in the U.S. who is from Germany and who is the central focus and the title character. She is almost a loner, not making friends easily and that makes her an easy target for the justice system when they begin to look for the person who killed her roommate. Lost in the maze of legalities, Annaliese depends on her professor Margeaux Robbin to help her. Margeaux unexpectedly becomes part of her legal defense team and insists persistently to Chase Crandall, her defense attorney, that Annaliese could not possibly have killed anyone. I loved the surprises within the story that were breathtakingly complex and completely engrossing. The story of Chase’s dogged determination to represent Annaliese well was gripping and fascinating as the author realistically portrayed he investigation leading up to the trial as well as the courtroom scenes themselves. All of the action rolled like a movie in my head and included some nail-biting suspense as well as a budding romance. I liked getting to know the characters and found them to be likable and relatable. Annaliese was a sympathetic character, far from home and totally dependent on others to get her out of her predicament but not able to offer much of an alibi that would help her legal team. My favorite character was Margeaux, the professor who related well with her students and thus was able to befriend Annaliese and to help in her defense. This story is expertly crafted and led me on a merry chase to find clues and figure out what was happening within the ranks of the police department as well as the office of the commonwealth attorney. The plot was fast-paced with authentic details about the legal process that were fascinating and that kept me immersed in the unfolding drama. The intricate plot threads were well woven together at the end, making this a totally satisfying and richly entertaining story.

Review of THE VOICE WE FIND by Nicole Deese

About the Book

ISBN-13:9780764241208

Publisher:Baker Publishing Group

Publication date:04/15/2025

Series:A Fog Harbor Romance

Pages:416

Two voices. One story. A chance to rewrite their future.

Sophie Wilder returns home to California with nothing more than a failed Broadway career and a geriatric cat. Stuck working at the family winery with her egotistical brother and desperate for a way to revive her acting dreams, she takes a side gig as an audiobook narrator with Fog Harbor Books. But getting mixed up in the life of her reluctant sound engineer was never a part of her plans.

August Tate is still reeling from taking on guardianship of his teen sister. Determined to find a solution to her degenerative hearing loss and to prevent his private recording studio from going under, he agrees to produce audiobooks part-time. When Sophie breathes new life into his creativity and forms an unexpected bond with his sister rooted in their common faith, he must confront the reasons he turned away from his own or risk losing the second chance he’s only just started to believe in.

My Thoughts

This book has multiple layers as well as a great cast of characters, all dealing with their own emotional baggage. I enjoyed the moderate pace which was perfect for the story since it allowed me to really think about what I was reading and how I would handle a similar situation. I also enjoyed the way the characters were so well developed, in a very methodical way as they conversed and interacted. The story flowed together just as the characters ran into bumps in their interpersonal relationships. I really enjoyed the way the author brought the three stories of Sophie, August and Gabby’s stories, with details that quickly got me invested in their lives and wanting the best for each of them. Sophie is an actress who has problems being on the stage and performing, August is feeling guilty about his parents’ deaths and Gabby is dealing with being left deaf in the same accident that took her parents. I was amazed by the strong characters and the layers of the story that peeled apart like an onion skin, revealing the heart of the problem and the hopes of each character in a believable and compassionate way. This is my first book that I have read by this author, but I definitely plan to look for others since I had difficulty putting this one down and had to tell others about how great it was right after finishing it. With the themes of self-discovery and forgiveness, this is a book that lends itself to group discussions in book clubs.

My Thoughts

What a stellar beginning to a new series by the talented Jerusha Agen! The story of Spring Weston, a rising star in pro cycling until she is paralyzed in a hit and run accident is heartbreaking and totally absorbing. The police officer assigned to investigate her case, Detective Torin Cotter, is suffering himself from a past that he can’t change and a future that he considers hopeless. The two of them have to come to grips with their present reality and decide if they want to accept God’s will for their lives or just give up on life. When Torin is faced with having to keep Spring safe in spite of his challenges with hearing gunfire, he is forced to face his demons or suffer another unimaginable tragedy. The choices in this novel are realistically portrayed and the characters and storyline are compelling. This is a story of forgiveness that seems impossible and self-discovery that leads to a chance at grabbing onto hope for the future. I loved every minute I spent with Torin and Spring as their characters popped from the page into my heart and I found myself giving both of them advice and even praying for their safety. The entire story was well written with compassion and a heartfelt understanding of injuries, both mental and physical. Fans of fantastic romantic suspense will want to dive into this book and not surface until the satisfying conclusion!

REVIEW of BREAK MY FALL by Lynn H. Blackburn

About the Book

ISBN: 978-0800745370

PAGE COUNT: 352

SERIES: GOSSAMER FALLS, BOOK #2

Dr. Meredith Quinn always planned to return to Gossamer Falls to practice dentistry. Now that she’s back home, she’s made it a point to offer clinics to children and adults in nearby underserved areas. Unfortunately, those same areas are known to harbor drug traffickers, and Police Chief Grayson Ward suspects that local law enforcement is looking the other way.

After too many losses, Grayson has closed off his heart. But with Meredith in his life, he feels his walls crumbling, leaving him exposed and vulnerable. To keep her alive, he must keep her close, but that makes it impossible for him to retreat and rebuild.

Will she be the one who finally helps him emerge from isolation? Or will this force of nature leave him shattered?

My Thoughts

This novel is a book that I couldn’t read fast enough but at the same time, I really didn’t want it to end. The story of dentist Meredith and sheriff Gray is absorbing and complicated since they are both stubborn, opinionated and independent. Meredith has somehow put herself into the crosshairs of a local crime boss and Gray is determined to keep her safe, in spite of her foolhardiness that leads her right into danger. I loved the family dynamics, especially how Mo and Cal rallied around Meredith to protect her and how her family had to approve of Gray as a possible suitor for her. The time around the fire pit was filled with humor as well as revelations and a great way to develop the characters. The plot was fast-paced, with a lot of switchbacks and plenty of unexpected surprises along the way. I liked how the characters were able to banter with each other to keep their spirits up even in the face of imminent danger. With danger from every direction and romance that was budding and sure to bloom, this book was a real winner for me in the romantic suspense category. With plenty of intrigue, heart and hope, this novel had a compelling mystery and a captivating cast of characters.

Review of BEACH VIBES by Susan Mallery

About the Book

ISBN-13:9781335402530

Publisher:Harlequin

Publication date:03/18/2025

Pages:384

While Beth is proud of her Malibu beach shop, Surf Sandwiches, she’s even prouder of her charismatic brother Rick, who rose from foster care through surgical residency. She makes subs, he saves lives. Life takes a turn for the happy after she finds out Rick is dating her new best friend, Jana. Then Jana’s handsome brother adds even more sparkle to Beth’s days…and nights.

But when she catches Rick with another woman—like, with-with—her visions of an idyllic family future disappear in one awful instant. Either she betrays her brother, or she keeps his secret and risks losing the man she loves and her best friend.

My Thoughts

All the feels are within the pages of this wonderful story! Beth, a recent divorcee, owns a sandwich shop on the beach and needs a friend. Jana, a single mom, works in a medical office but aspires to do more with her life. When the two meet doing volunteer work together, there is an instant bond and a firm friendship begins. The story gets complicated when Jana starts dating Rick, Beth’s brother, and Beth is infatuated with Teddy, Jana’s brother. Sparks fly between both couples as the infatuation quickly turns to romance. The dilemma is that Beth knows that Rick is two-timing Jana and doesn’t know how to tell her without creating a rift in their friendship and in her relationship with Teddy. This story is one about finding love but it is mostly about loyalty, friendship, loss and finding a way to forgive in an impossible situation. It’s about moving forward, grabbing hold of dreams and reaching beyond what you think you are capable of. There are so many different layers to the story. I particularly enjoyed Beth’s mentor relationship with one of her employees Kai. Beth, who had never been encouraged to do more than run the sandwich shop, is a great mentor for Kai and ends up being a good example for him to attend college classes. The children in the story stole the show and my heart, including Jana’s young daughter Linnie and Teddy’s three motherless children. I enjoyed how the author wove a really tangled story and then showed us a masterfully written conclusion that brought all of the loose threads together. The characters are believable and relatable and I even found myself giving advice to them and wishing hard for Rick to get his well-deserved comeuppance. The plot is absorbing, well-paced and well crafted with the author’s signature humor and emotional depth. With the complex family dynamics and the appealing characters, this book was a real winner for me from beginning to end!

Series:The Erin Delaney Mysteries , #1

Pages:336

Grappling with the aftermath of a tragic incident that altered her life, ex-police officer and bestselling mystery author Erin Delaney finds solace in the tranquility of a cabin nestled deep in the Smoky Mountains. But her restful stay is shattered when cries pierce the night, hinting at a lurking presence haunting the woods. When local police chief Adrian Nightengale seeks her help with a carefully arranged murder scene, she is thrust back into the world of crime solving. As they delve into the investigation, Erin’s intuition reveals chilling truths about the killer’s motives and strategically perfected methods.

Joined by the enigmatic Kaely Quinn-Hunter, a former FBI behavioral analyst, Erin not only embarks on a quest to stop the merciless serial killer, but also confronts the revived ghosts of her past. In a race against time, Erin must defeat her own demons while outmaneuvering a cunning killer or risk becoming the next victim in this deadly game of cat and mouse.

My Thoughts

Sanctuary, Tennessee, should be an idyllic place to escape from stress and to just spend time with a friend, or that is what former police officer Erin Delaney expects when she decides to spend a week with her friend and phone counselor Kaely Quinn. Quinn, a former FBI profiler, sets up the plans for the trip and convinces Erin to leave the safety of her apartment and travel to the mountains to spend a week talking and shopping, just relaxing basically. Plans went awry quickly when Erin is called to a murder scene the first night that she is there. A young woman has been killed and the signs immediately point to a serial killer. Erin feels useful since she can use her skills as a former police officer as well as her current knowledge as an author of a best-selling murder mystery. But nothing prepares her for the evil that lurks around the small town of Sanctuary as she and Kaely have to use all of their skill to try to catch a killer before they become the target. Filled with red herrings and lots of clues to follow, this book has the signature style of a master author who knows well how to captivate her audience and keep us all reading. The tension in the story is relentless as a blizzard threatens, a young woman is missing and the town is at the mercy of an unknown killer. With clever twists that are satisfying and edgy and a brilliantly complex plot, this book captured my imagination, making it so that I could not turn the pages fast enough or get enough of this book. With an intriguing plot and relatable characters, this is a fast-paced thrill ride into the heart of a killer storm and the murderer who waits in it for his next victim.

When life feels like it’s closing in around you, sometimes the solution is to open the doors wide and invite others in . . .

Jewel McKerry is on the brink of unraveling as she heads home to Oregon to help care for her father who has early-onset dementia. Her thirteen-year-old daughter is upset about the move. Her beekeeper dad is a humorous handful. Her mom is overworked and overwhelmed. Finances are stretched tight. And, according to her father, the neighbors are nothing but trouble.

Despite all of these challenges, Jewel takes on one more when she convinces her parents to turn their decrepit farmhouse into a B&B in order to make some needed money. Her old high school flame turned contractor steps in to help, but Jewel isn’t sure she can really trust him. And those “troublesome” neighbors? The handsome widower and his teenage daughter just might be the key to making all this work.

My Thoughts

This is a somewhat humorous and totally empathetic look at a family dealing with the dad having dementia and all of the problems that result from his illness. Jewell returns home to help out her mom with her dad and decides that changes have to be made and quickly in order to keep him safer. The two-story house that her parents have lived in for years will not work any longer for a man who continues to stumble and fall, so she resolves to turn the old house into a B & B and install her parents on a new manufactured home on the property nearby. The determination of Jewel to help her parents is heartwarming, even if she does seem to move faster than they can keep up with. I really enjoyed the multi-layered plot, with a teen daughter not wanting to move and having to establish new friendships, a mom with her own health problems, a neighbor who is helpful and kind but whom her dad does not like and a former classmate who is trying to strike up a new romance. Jewell manages to keep her eyes on her goal, get the help she needs and awakens to new insight into the lives of her parents and some self-discovery truths, too. I liked the dynamics between the realistic characters and the way they each had their own individual strengths that made the well-paced story work so well. I liked Jewell’s ability to think outside of the box and to be willing to make sacrifices for herself and Cooper in order to help out her parents. This is a wonderful story, with a hint of romance and a lot of love for family on every well-written page.

More In This Series

My Thoughts

This faith-filled and compellingly suspense-filled novel had me on the edge of my seat and kept me totally engrossed in the story. The basic plot had lots of elements that made it entertaining and realistic, including a kidnapped child, a powerful crime boss, and a team of private investigators who are doggedly determined to carry out their responsibilities. Avery Reynolds is on the trail of “Big Eddie” but cannot quite catch him when he turns the tables on her by kidnapping her godchild. All bets are off when Ethan Bridger, a security specialist, finds out what is happening and makes it his personal mission to keep Avery safe and to help her capture the crime king. The characters were perfectly portrayed, especially Avery and her reluctance to accept the Lord as her Savior. Ethan and Avery are both on the same road, seeking salvation, kind of, but mostly just wanting to live their lives without interference. The action is non-stop with a quick pace and an amazing attention to details in the main plot as well as the sub-plots. I enjoyed the wedding scenes at the beginning that introduced the characters and allowed me to get to know them again. So, even if I had not read the previous books in the series, this one could have been enjoyed as a standalone. I like the way faith is included in the book and all of the loose ends are tied up, including bringing refugees from Cuba. There were a lot of twists and some really surprising developments as the story progressed. This is Christian romantic suspense at its best.

About the Book

Product Details

ISBN-13:9780840714220 Publisher:Nelson, Thomas, Inc. Publication date:03/04/2025. Series:A Sanctuary Novel , #1 Pages:352

Paradise Alden’s childhood in Nova Cambridge, Alabama, was idyllic until the night her parents were murdered. Since then, life has left her scarred. The abuse she suffered in the foster care system, her first love’s betrayal, and the jaguar attack that nearly destroyed her career have led to an unshakable distrust—in men, in God, and maybe in even in herself.

After fifteen years, returning to her hometown is a last resort to finding her life again. She’s hoping the wildlife refuge where she’s accepted a veterinarian job will be the perfect place to heal from her recent traumas and unlock her memories about the night her parents died. But the day she arrives at The Sanctuary, a body is discovered on the grounds. And soon, a series of deadly events threatens not only her future, but the man who, despite all odds, still makes her pulse stutter. Arson, a shooting, a break-in, and multiple instances of animals being freed from their enclosures all point back to him, but Paradise knows Blake Lawson isn’t responsible. Not the man who has been helping his mother manage The Sanctuary these past six months and care for his stepbrothers in the wake of their father’s death . . . even if his betrayal years ago cost her everything.

Someone dangerous is lurking beneath the town’s moss-draped trees, and Paradise refuses to let another murderer disappear into the shadows.

My Thoughts

This novel is a wild ride in a wild animal sanctuary where the owner is being threatened and is in constant danger of being killed. That’s the scenario when Paradise comes back to Alabama to accept a job as a vet at the sanctuary and finds more than she bargained for. The layers in this book are numerous and all are equally memorable. Paradise is dealing with trauma in her childhood, betrayal by her best friend Blake (who happens to be the son of the sanctuary’s owner), and new trauma from being mauled by a big cat. Blake has his own issues to deal with as he takes seriously his commitment to his mom Jenna and his two half-brothers. All of the characters popped off the page and right into my imagination. I could picture Paradise with her “mane” of hair and the two precocious little boys who loved adventure. The mystery is in who is targeting the sanctuary and why. There are many twists and red herrings before the culprit is ultimately revealed, making the book absorbing and totally captivating. I enjoyed the themes of forgiveness, restoration, seeking truth, sacrifice, and family issues. I especially enjoyed seeing characters from a previous book who live in Tupelo Grove, from another series by Coble and Acker. The truth is I really enjoyed my journey through this fascinating book in which I learned a lot about wild animals and even more about human nature and how to make wiser choices. The faith foundation is obvious but not overwhelming to the storyline, but rather adding to the overall tale. I cannot wait for more in this series and to discover who will be featured next from the sanctuary or its environs!

Synopsis

Haunted by a half-forgotten past, former army photographer Remi Grant is working at an isolated storm-watching lodge on the rocky Washington coast when she receives a mysterious puzzle piece. The piece may be the catalyst to unlock a disturbing incident she struggles to remember—the event that sent her into hiding. But with heavy storms rolling in, she must focus on the present, not get caught up in the past.

When a mysterious man at the lodge saves her life—more than once—Remi becomes suspicious and confronts him. After a catastrophic event in his own life, former military pilot Hawk Beckett is trying to get some perspective at the suggestion of his former commanding officer. Faced with the fiercest storm to hit the coast in a decade, Remi and Hawk are forced into survival mode.

But they’re not alone at the lodge. Someone doesn’t want Remi to remember what happened—and they will stop at nothing to see her dead.

MY THOUGHTS

The setting of a stormy coast in Washington state is perfect for the suspense that ramps up constantly in this book, even as the intensity of the storm increases. Remi Grant has lost a significant part of her memory and has sought refuge in a lodge on the coast, helping to manage the lodge while she tries to recover from amnesia. When she realizes that someone wants her to remember what happened on that army helicopter, she also starts to face danger from an unknown assailant. Hawk Beckett is staying at the lodge while he recovers from his own mishap in a helicopter and becomes Remi’s rescuer from several life-threatening situations. Together, the two of them set out to determine what has made Remi a threat to unknown powers and how they can neutralize that threat. The pace of this book is as fast as the powerful storm in the story and the characters are realistically portrayed and dynamic. I particularly enjoyed the research that the author included about the possible source of the villains and why they were coming after Remi. These details enriched the story with authenticity and added to the immersive drama. There are so many head-spinning twists and well-placed red herrings that I was thrilled to read a book that I could not guess what would happen next. The author is known for her riveting suspense and this heart-in-your-throat book did not disappoint. The romance is woven well into the story, but the main thrust of the book is the gripping suspense and the escalating tension that kept me completely engrossed by the story from beginning to end.
