Integrity: Do You Have It?

Integrity is something that you either have or you don’t.  But it starts when you are young and you build a foundation that is based on integrity.  So, what is it?  It’s more than honesty.  It’s more than being morally upright.  It is choosing consistently to stand for what is right, no matter who is looking, and even if no one is looking.  My students used to tease me that they would pay me big bucks to change their grades so that they could pass.  My answer was always the same, “I refuse to compromise my integrity because of your lack of studying.”  Then, I would explain that integrity is the choice you make when you think no one is looking.

  1. God is always watching and people are watching too even when we don’t know. I remember one day at work when I said something. Someone who didn’t hear me well thought I swore. And he said “omg I can’t believe you just swore”. On hearing it, everyone in that wing of our office turned and gasped assist echoed what he said. I have to let him know exactly what I said and it wasn’t difficult for them to accept my truth. I never told them I don’t swear but the way I live my life made them know there are things I don’t do. We are always surrounded by witnesses and we can’t afford to ruin our witnesses!

    1. Exactly! When my students used to say, “Oh, God” I would tell them that they needed to complete the prayer or tell God “never mind” since they had called His name and now had His attention. I was trying to train them not to use the Lord’s Name in vain. They got that and eventually respected what I was telling them not to say in my classroom.
