I was discussing the Ten Commandments with my Sunday School class yesterday and we got to the sixth commandment, “Thou shalt not kill.” In the NIV, it says, “You shall not murder.” So, with my class of 11-18 year olds, we talked about murder. The illustration that “Answers in Genesis” had provided to go along with the commandment was very interesting. It was a mom holding a newborn baby. So, of course, we started talking about abortion and whether it is murder or not. We included the new law signed by Cuomo in New York that allows babies to be killed up to and including at birth. But the Bible is clear.

I also shared with the students my strong opinion that since we didn’t create life, we shouldn’t be the ones who destroy it. God decides the beginning and end of a person’s life. So, we also talked about euthanasia.

God made us! He created us, from the tiny sperm and egg that came together miraculously and formed a human being…each of us! Who are we to decide that a life should end because it is no longer contributing to society or because it isn’t convenient at the time? I will always stand for life and the Scriptures back me up. Wonder what the pro-abortion and pro-euthanasia people use to back up their beliefs? I think perhaps they use their own sense of self-worth and making their choices more important than God’s. What do you think?

  3. “Who are we to decide that a life should end because it is no longer contributing to society or because it isn’t convenient at the time?” Granted, either of these is clearly wrong.
    But if I may play devil’s advocate here, a third reason is frequently pointed to as the compassionate choice – when a person’s pain is so unbearable that it’s easy to believe that putting an end to their suffering is carrying out the Golden Rule. (I would certainly want someone to end my agony – I THINK…)
    I like the way Dr. James Dobson said it, in regards to using extraordinary means to keep someone’s heart beating beyond what would be happening in the natural course of events. He said that there’s a difference between extending life and extending death.
    I think this is one of those areas where sincere believers can differ, and while (having never been in the position of having a loved one beg me to end it all) I am unsure what I would do until I actually find myself there, I am grateful for grace. We all make so many mistakes in the course of our lifetimes that we need the assurance that even if/when we’re wrong, we can be forgiven. Not to say we should make these decisions glibly, just saying that life is complex and these situations make us realize all the more that we are utterly incapable of living righteous lives on our own,

    1. Life is complex and so is death. I have a Living Will and in it, I have asked that the hospital workers not resuscitate me should I die. Once I am gone to be with God, I want to stay there instead of having machines make my heart beat and my lungs breathe.

  6. Thank you Vickie. I can personally attest to the witness of God reaching out to guide lives born out of wedlock. My mother and my daughter each carried a child to birth when conception occurred before marriage. I am that son, and I have a handsome grandson who is a sophomore in high school. God’s Word is at work.
