Speaking and Listening

As those of you who follow my blog regularly know, my word for this year is “listen.” God has been working on my active listening skills so that I really hear with empathy and compassion what the other person is saying. That way I hope to respond with more of Christ’s love instead of my own emotions.

Have you ever heard the phrase “speak off the cuff”? It means, according to http://theidioms.com, to speak without preparation or to speak without thinking about it. Isn’t that what most of us do most of the time? We want to get our voice out there, thinking that our opinion is the most important one. When we take time to think about what we will say, we tend to give a more coherent answer that actually addresses the issue and hopefully shows people that we are in tune with God’s Spirit.

There are some real characters on the political platform these days, those who say anything to get into the spotlight and then end up looking foolish in the eyes of many Americans. One particular politician comes to my mind immediately for her vitriol against the President and her support of all things racist. I was even more appalled at the woman from Texas who blamed the floods on those who voted for Trump and hoped that the people who didn’t vote for him were safe and that the MAGA voters got what they deserved. That doesn’t sound like any kind of Christian perspective to me. No one gets what we deserve thanks to God’s grace and mercy! But to attack grieving parents and family members and friends in such a vile manner…she doesn’t know the scriptures about listening before speaking, does she? Now ask yourself, do you listen before speaking? And do you think before you speak? We don’t want to talk to others “off the cuff.” We want to say the words that will help, not hurt more.

We need to be the ones who spread peace and love and hope, not hatred or division. If we are actively listening to what others are saying, we can respond with an answer that does not add fuel to already burning fires. Some people will set fires just to watch them burn. We are called to use our words to put the fires out and to soothe those who have already been burned by the flames.

We are the only example of Jesus that some people will see because they never go to church. If we are entering into the same kind of debates that those around us seem to think is expected, then how are we different? Did Jesus debate or did He simply speak the truth and pray? God’s Word and His truth is not open to debate. If we speak the truth in love, we are presenting a message of hope, not one of condemnation and judgment.

Police or Ambulance

When you come upon the scene of an accident, you will usually find two groups of helpers there: the police and the ambulance. They have totally different jobs. The police are there to investigate and uphold the law, to find out who is at fault and to hold them accountable. The ambulance is there to find out who is hurt, where they are hurting, how serious their injuries are and to transport the injured to the hospital if necessary.

When you come upon a person who is not saved, are you the policeman or the paramedic? By that I mean, are you there to investigate their sin and condemn them, letting them know in no uncertain terms that they are headed for hell? Or are you there to find out what is hurting them and to help them to feel better in whatever way you can? Think about that for a minute.

Many of us, including me at times, meet hurting people and instead of offering them the love of Jesus, we tend to hit them upside the head with the Bible that we profess to believe in. We want them to change, right now, and if it takes berating to get them to the point of confession and repentance, then that is what we use. We are being a policeman for their hurting souls, and that is not what the sinner needs in order to change. I don’t think that condemning a person with our judgment about their wrongdoing is going to change anyone’s heart. We aren’t put on the earth to investigate the evil in it; we are here to help people change so that good wins and not evil.

I had a Bible study group last night and this was one of our discussions as we read and pondered the first chapter of Romans. Is that how Jesus approached sinners? He confronted their sins and demanded that they change? No. With the exception of the Pharisees whom He did confront and call out for sin, Jesus went to every sinner with compassion and love. He understood their weaknesses and wanted to help them know forgiveness, grace and the strength to overcome that only comes from God. Jesus was like a paramedic, if you will, assessing the need and offering whatever is needed to make the person whole again. He takes people from their place of pain to the hospital of forgiveness and acceptance where they can be made whole again.

I want to be the paramedic, not the policeman. God didn’t give me a badge to carry around and let everyone know I’m an authority that they need to listen to. After all, I don’t have all of the answers anyway since I am a sinner saved by grace, just like the person I am trying to share with. Rather, He gives me the cross and reminds me and the person I am speaking to that it’s all about sacrifice and God’s great love. Yes, people are committing some atrocious sins, but that doesn’t mean that it’s up to me to tell them how awful they are. What is up to me is to show them and tell them about God’s love for them, even while they are sinning. God doesn’t categorize sins as “great sin, lesser sin.” ALL have sinned and all sins are the same to God because they separate mankind whom He loves from the Creator that made them and wants a relationship with them.

The gospel rides along with us wherever we go and brings the good news to all who will hear and believe it. So, let’s ride in the ambulance, not the police car. Let’s remember that the gospel has power all by itself when we apply it correctly, with a heart of love and not one of condemnation and judgment.

Reality above the Real World

I feel bad for those who don’t believe in God, not just because they are missing out on a relationship with Him, but also because the real world of sickness and troubles is all they know. They don’t have the power of God on their side so they can rely on Him to help them through the sickness and the challenges of life. God doesn’t always heal, but sometimes He does. God doesn’t always take you out of the trouble, but sometimes He does. And whether the healing comes or not and whether the trouble disappears or not, God is still there and still by your side all the way through until the end if you trust in Him. Thus, I feel bad for those who don’t believe in God. They don’t have that knowledge that no matter what happens, God is right there, fighting on our side, and in the end, He always wins. The reality is God is real. The sad thing is that people without God don’t know it.

We Need God’s Help

If the prophet Jeremiah needed God’s help, then who am I to say that I can forge forth on my own and will just let God know if I need Him? No, that old hymn, “I Need Thee Every Hour” is more appropriate for me, and probably for you, too. We cannot stand in a world that glorifies evil and sin without God to strengthen us and stand beside us during the daily battles of life. The reality is that we are weak, but He is strong, just like the song I sing to my grandchildren. My faith and trust in God continues to grow daily as He cultivates in me the image of His beloved Son, but I have not arrived yet. In order to face the day and all it brings, I need God’s wisdom, His grace, His mercy and His strength. God is always there, and like Jeremiah, I need to call on Him for the help that I need.

Today I go to the ophthalmologist for a follow up on the eye infection I have had that lasted almost two months. I am better now and can mostly see clearly (some blurriness at times still), but I am thankful for an eye doctor who knew how to treat the disease and wanted to make sure that it’s cleared up. God heals and sometimes uses doctors to do it. I am thankful for doctors but mostly I am grateful to God!

Power

I am easily irritated during stormy weather because we live rurally and our electricity goes out pretty regularly. Sometimes, we are in the dark for hours, sometimes for days. Once, during a tropical storm, we were without power for almost two weeks. I don’t like the dark or the inconvenience of having no power for anything.

Worse than losing electricity is to not be plugged into our power source of life itself.

Through being plugged into the source of our life, strength and hope, we get the benefits of endurance, patience and joy. We don’t have to worry about storms knocking us offline because God is only a prayer away.

God is always right there even when we wander off the path and away from the source of our power. He is ready and willing to help us plug back in, get renewed energy from His Holy Spirit flowing in us and then He enables us to reach out to others and share the power He gives us with them. The current of God is flowing in us, through us and out to others. That’s the kind of power that we never have to worry about losing!

Interestsing insight on prayer. We are quick to say “help” may or may not show gratitude and say “thanks” but how many of us take time to sit in awe of what God has done and say, “Wow”?

My Encouragement for Today

Remember when you didn’t worry at all about anything because you knew your parents were taking care of everything for you? Food was prepared and served for you, clothes were purchased, rides were arranged or provided. I never remember getting one single bill during my childhood. My parents just did what parents do, they took care of us. And like most children, we just took their provision and care for granted.

As an adult, we are assaulted on every side by things that could cause us great concern. I say “could” because if we are leaning in to our Heavenly Father, we know that He is caring and providing for us just as our loving parents used to do. The storms of life are many and unexpected, but nothing surprises God and He is a stable rock for us to cling to in a sea of change that threatens to overwhelm us.

Lest you think I must be going through a really tough time right now, I’m not, at least not currently. But life has a tendency to throw curve balls when we least expect them, so I am clinging to this Scripture to help me through whatever comes next. God holds on to me just as I hold on to Him and His promises. The verse clearly says I will help you. It doesn’t get any better than that. He is as close as our hand reaching out and promises His assistance, no matter what we may need. He is our steadfast source of strength and ready to battle with us against the waves of life. He may not take us out of the storm. In fact, in my experience, that rarely happens. However, He is there in the storm with us, calming our hearts so that we can make it through to the calm that awaits us after the storm passes. Storms of life come and go, but our God is always there. Always!

God Is Faithful

God’s promises always amaze me, but none more so than those I read in my devotional this morning.

My hope is in God, so I am blessed. He is the Maker of heaven and earth and all that in is them. And, best of all, the promise is that He remains faithful forever. Not just for today when things may be difficult. God is there for the good times, the bad times, all the times.

And in case I am wondering how I will get safely from point A to point B, God graciously reassures me that He takes me by the hand and tells me not to be afraid. Just as I hold the children under my care and cuddle them and tell them that it will be alright. God does the same for me. It’s up to me to listen. God is there and promises His help.

God’s Word is always lighting up my path and He always seems to know when I need a brighter light shone or when I need to see something new that I haven’t noticed before. I pray for each of you to find the help and hope that you need in the Lord God, the Maker of Heaven and earth, and the Creator of YOU!

May God bless you with a new revelation from His Word today!

Falling Down

As I have aged, I have discovered that the law of gravity seems to be more active in my life. As I told one of my physicians, “I don’t know how or why I fell. I was just walking, and then I wasn’t.” Fortunately, each time I have fallen, I have had the helping hand of my spouse to assist me in getting up.

Did you know that it is possible to fall in other ways, too? When we venture too far from the Lord and the reading of His Word, we have a tendency to “fall away” from Him. I don’t think that this is the law of gravity at work, however, because it is actually that we are moving away instead of toward Him. It is my belief that we are always moving in our relationship with God, either closer to Him or further away and that is based on our own choice. But God doesn’t leave us way out in left field, unable to get up and calling loudly for help.

No matter how far we get from the Lord, He is only a prayer away. We just call on His Name and He lifts us up. That is not to say that confession and repentance may not be necessary. It is saying, though, that God doesn’t just leave us there on the ground unless that is where we want to be, stubbornly refusing to call on Him for help. It is in our actions that we determine how much God will do for us because I firmly believe that He will not come in when He is not welcome. So, if you feel yourself getting further from God, ask yourself honestly who moved. I can assure you that it was not the Lord who moved away from you! Since you are the one who moved, then you can also be the one to move back and press in closer to the one who upholds and lifts you up.

Hope and “If” by Rudyard Kipling

Many years ago, I received a copy of this poem by Kipling as a gift at a graduation. Since then, I have looked for the poem almost annually to present to others who have reached a milestone in their lives and are moving forward into an unknown future. Here is the poem, and credit goes to http://www.etsy.com for this photo.

This poem does not mention God at all or what should be His place in the lives of the young person seeking to make his/her way in the world. I do not know about Kipling’s faith or lack thereof and it is not for me to judge Him. I’m simply stating that faith is not part of the poem, so perhaps a better choice for me to give as a verse or a gift would be a Scripture verse or two that would lead them to look to where their true help lies when times get tough.

You see, the poet Kipling gives rather sound advice but it does not have the foundation that it needs to make it completely useful. Yes, it’s good to trust yourself, but it’s better to trust God. If the things in life are broken, then it’s good to remember that God is there to help you pick up the pieces and build something new. God is the one who helps us to hold on when we think all is lost. And, finally, the King we need to walk with daily is Jesus and glean wisdom from His Word. Yes, the poem “If” is useful, but God’s Word is a sure foundation, one that is trustworthy and reliable, a way that we can be absolutely certain that no matter what kinds of troubles assault us, we have the Lord of all of the earth in our corner, encouraging us to battle once more and declare the victory that He has already given us. So, rather than have an “if” that depends on my human choices and weaknesses, I choose to have a certain hope in the Lord. I hope that is what your choice is, too, for it is only hope in God and His mercy, grace and love that will lead to the future that we all desire, eternity with Him.
